Other than being a brothel in Melbourne (you learn something new every day), I am talking about the bedroom! Based on the recommended 8 hours sleep, we spend over a third of our lives in our bedroom. THAT'S RIDICULOUS! It should be one of our favorite rooms in the home, but I'm finally in love with the place I sleep.
I used to take for granted my ability to sleep like a rock, but my body has been yelling at me.
The bed is so so important. In the states I had a really soft mattress in Ikea (of course) and it was too soft for us. When we got to Australia we tried an Ecosa matress...one of those ones that are delivered to you. We loved the convenience and the branding and the way it inflated itself, but we felt like we were sleeping on a wooden board and my arms went numb every night. We felt like Goldilocks.
"Always remember to fall asleep with a dream and wake up with a purpose.

Finally, we invested in a custom-made mattress that was actually the same price as the boxed ones. It's one of the best decisions we've ever made. Our backs feel better and thus, we're not grumpy when we wake up. Take care of your backs, people! Your body will thank you!
Aside from a good mattress, we got a simply-styled bed frame and attached two lamps so that we don't have to run to the bed after turning the lights off (i swear there might be a monster under there still). We opted for floating bedside shelves to keep the ground free and clear. I've got my lady legs ashtray as a catch-all and a ring holder from Muji. My kindle and ipad are hiding in the drawer and my phone is plugged in and under the pillow.
I've always had so much unnecessary stuff piled up beside my bed that I never wanted to clean it and it got dusty, and long story short, I was a mess.
Obviously we love to put a personal touch in the place since it would be stark otherwise, so we put up a photo ledge to put up a set of our favorite photos along with my earrings and our favorite out-of-date calendar. Faces of family members are there to see all the time and the pops of color make us happy.
I'm sure I'm in the same boat as other people when I say I'd prefer a closet with a view than a mansion without one. Our bedroom fits our bed and really, not much else. Our diffuse light in the morning (we're west-facing) cracks between the blinds in the morning and when we open them, it feels like a breath of fresh air.
The built-in mirror is kind of nice, just so I can see what I look like before I leave the apartment, but it also reflects the light and bounces all over the room. If you feel like your room is a bit too dark, try putting up a mirror. Not only does it lighten up the space, it usually acts as a mind-bending illusion that makes your room look bigger than it is.
Happy sleeping, all of you! Hope your bedrooms create a wonderful sanctuary for you. If not, I hope you have fun making it into one.
Cheers.
